June 5th – World Environment Day (WED)
The United Nations Environment Program –UNEP- has chosen June 5th to be the World environment Day- WED. As the Rio+20 Conference is approaching, the WED is an opportunity to promote the environment worldwide.
The main theme of the day is green economy, which is a leading initiative to be presented in Rio+ 20 and led by UNEP since 2008. UNEP describes green economy as a concept “that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities”.
This year, Brazil is hosting the WED, as it is also hosting the UN Conference for sustainable development –Rio +20 – from June 20th to June 22nd. To celebrate WED, many people chose to gather around exhibitions, music events, symposiums and conferences.
