International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women , the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) and the Webster University in Vienna organized, with the support of the the Permanent Missions from France and Norway, a symposium focusing on the acts of violence commited on women by terrorist groups and organizations and to debate on the answers than can be proposed by the International Community.
In the speech pronounced during the symposium, Ambassador Marion Paradas, Permanent Representative for France, recalled that the international framework, although relevant, was challenged by the actions of groups suchs as ISIS or Boko Haram, which called for complementary answers. So was the topic, at least partially, of the International Conference hold in Paris, on September 8th, and dedicated to the victims of ethnic and religious violence in the Near East. According to this, three pinciples should guide our collective answer :
- the urge for humanitary action;
- the moral and legal priority to fight against impunity;
- political responsability, including the use of legitimate force to protect and implement some universal principles that cannot remain idle concepts.
The symposium was also granted by deeply moving testimonies on the situation of women abandonned to the barbarious behaviour of extermist organisations in Irak and Syria, and by some focus on big or modest initiatives, which proove that the world can ask and should keep on asking for the end of violence against women and promoting the fight against the impunity of their perpetrators.
