IAEA – passing away of Mr. Yukiya AMANO, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (22 July 2019)
It is with sadness that France has learned the passing away of Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA).
We address our most sincere condolences to his family, his relatives and the staff of the Agency.
France also commends the work carried out by Mr. Yukiya Amano at the head of the IAEA since 2009. As a strong defender of the development of nuclear energy and of civil nuclear applications for peace and development, Mr. Yukiya Amano also worked firmly to the enforcement of the international nonproliferation regime, in particular, by affirming the central role played by the IAEA in dealing with crisis in Iran and in North Korea. The IAEA is thus in charge of monitoring and verifying the implementation by Iran of its nuclear commitments within the Iran nuclear deal agreed in Vienna (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPoA).
Mr. Yukiya Amano, who spoke French, had studied in France and was Consul General of Japan in Marseille from 1997 to 1999. As IAEA Director General, he came to France several times for high level visits.
