In the context of the negotiations on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, the fifth thematic informal session will be held in Vienna on 4 and 5 September 2017. This session will focus on migrant smuggling and trafficking in persons.
The Global Compact is an initiative taken in September 2016 at the United Nations General Assembly in a session where States adopted the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants.

This statement demonstrates the political will of world leaders to protect human rights, save lives and share responsibility globally. It is expected that the Global Compact will be adopted in 2018, following a series of six thematic sessions (four of which have already taken place). This initiative is an opportunity to improve governance on migration, address the challenges associated with current migration, and enhance the participation of migrants and migration in sustainable development.

During this thematic session, this representation will organize, in cooperation with the Permanent Representation of Greece, a side event on "enhancing the protection of unaccompanied minors along migration routes".
