The conference “Achieving Gender Equality and Female Empowerment”, organized by the Vienna Liaison Office of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) from 10 to 12 January 2018 aims at discussing actions, potentials, and challenges linked to SDG 5: "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girl".
The goal of the SDG 5 is to “Provide women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes that will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large". Participants will share best practices and explore potential future collaborations in this multi-stakeholder forum, while spotlighting the International Gender Champions – Vienna initiative.
This conference will join Vienna-based organizations, the diplomatic community, civil society, NGOs, academics, business leaders and media representatives .
The session has been opened by Mr Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO, and with the broadcasting of a video statement by Ms Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals (including equal access to primary education between girls and boys), women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world. Gender equality is not only a matter of ethics and politics but also the assurance of the efficiency of development policies.
France keeps on being fully commited to reaching this goal, for example through the Gender and Devlopment Strategy 2013-2017. 124 382 223 euros have been dedicated by the French Development Agency (AFD, Agence française pour le développement) for gender balance dedicated programmes.
